§  A popular work around that we extole is thinking beyond the flight search engine. If one flight search engine fails you, combine two or three to build the itinerary you want. A solitary engine will access only a fraction of all available airlines and flights. A solitary airport has only a subset of airlines and flights. One flight search engine can can have no access to the flight you want and one airport can be absent of an airline you want. If one engine or one airport or one ticket fails you, combine resources as needed to make your trip as you want it to be. You can write your own itinerary instead of someone elses and you can often write your own discount when no offers are available. The caveat is making connections at an airport where you are moving from one ticket to another. Airlines have no obligation if you miss a between tickets connection. You can reduce that risk by increasing the layover time between flights. You can buy trip insurance that will cover the cost. Since money saved is often substantial, you can consider using an airport hotel to get a restfull sleep between cross ticket flights. Another caveat is documentation. In most situations, your multiple tickets will be sufficient for transit but it is important to verify visitor entry or transit requirements for each airport in each country of your self written itinerary and wise to do so before you buy.

¶  When consolidator or broker discounted fares are not available on the travel dates of a trip you must take or want strongly to make, pulling connecting airports into service will often put that discount back in your wallet.

¶  Using any flight search engine, input the long haul flight itinerary you want to price from origin airport A to destination airport B. Select the lowest price for an acceptable itinerary displayed in the flight search results. Examine that itinerary and note connecting airports C one or two flight segments before your destination. We can call (C) the approach airport and name this gambit the approach airport strategy. Now input for A to C and check that price. Then input for C to B and check that price. Total the two ticket prices and compare it with the one ticket price.

¶  You might learn that one public or private flight search engine has a specially low price to an approach airport A to C and a different engine is showing a promotional fare for C to B. Expanding this strategy even further, a person might come to know that a particular airport always has good prices or better flights to a certain region or country and shop that for the A to C approach even when it is not shown as a connecting airport in the initial flight search results for A to B. An outside in helper could come from scanning special airfare lists to spot a potential approach airport.

¶  Trips from North America into the Pacific region and especially to island nations can often make use of Seoul, Bangkok, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Other Pacific Ocean areas are as well or better served by Singapore, Brisbane, Sydney, Auckland, Manila, Taipei and Tokyo. Leaving the East Coast for Central Asia or India, you might find better prices using a European or Middle Eastern airport as an approach. Trips into Africa are well served by London, Amsterdam, Zurich, and Paris while Brussels, Lisbon, Madrid, and Frankfurt can be better for some African destinations. In general, Washington DC WAS, Philadelphia PHL and New York City NYC have a higher number of direct flights into Africa than other regions. Trips into the more eastern parts of Europe often benefit by booking into western cities and trips into the Middle East are well served via London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt. Flights into Central and South America are well served via Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Trips into the Caribbean can use Miami, Fort Lauderdale, San Juan Puerto Rico, New York, and Philadelphia as intermediate airports. Atlanta has some non stop flights to southern Africa. When the Mediterranean, Middle East or North Africa is on your mind, try using London, Lisbon, Madrid, Paris, Rome, Athens, Sofia or Istanbul as approach airports. The idea is that buying a ticket to an intermediate airport and matching it up with a second ticket onward to your destination will often yield a lower total cost. Sometimes you can use the multiple destination function of a flight search engine to route a flight via the approach airport and get the same price reduction put on one ticket.

¶  Airports, the airlines that serve them, the municipality, the local economy, the County or Province, the state, the country, trade agreements with other countries, regulations, travel agencies, air ticket brokers, and airline consolidators all have an impact on airfare pricing. The extra effort to study flights and pricing differences between airports can often yield hundreds of saved dollars and the cost is driving or riding just a bit further to get to the alternate departure (or arrival) airport. This tip applies to every airport of your itinerary. If you live along the northern tier of the United States and within a two hour drive from a major Canadian airport, price your trip starting from there and compare total cost with fares from your local airport. If your local airport is small with few airlines, check the fares when departing the nearest lerger airport with more airlines. If you live north, left or right and want a trip south, look for a cheap flight to Los Angeles LAX, Houston IAH, Atlanta ATL, Fort Lauderdale FLL or Miami MIA and check the fares from there to your destination. If you live on the left and want a flight to Europe, see if a cheap flight will get you to Chicago ORD, Washington DC WAS, Philadelphia PHL or New York City NYC and check the fares from there to your destination. If you live on the right and want a trip way to the left, a cheap flight to Los Angekes LAX, San Francisco SFO or Seattle SEA (or Vancouver YVR) combined with a ticket from there into the Pacific or East Asia can produce a better itinerary at a lower total cost.

¶  Example: a one ticket quote round trip fare from Harrisburg MDT to Auckland AKL from a major brand flight search engine is MDT AKL 3699 USD. A round trip flight from MDT to LAX is MDT LAX 369 USD. A round trip flight from LAX to Auckland is LAX AKL 1726 USD. The total for two tickets is 2095 and I just saved myself 1604 dollars for twenty minutes work. Switching to a discounter for the LAX AKL flight segment, the round trip fare is 1395.20. Now the two ticket cost is 1764.20 and I saved 1934.80 dollars for a half hour's work. Just to make a point for airports, using the major brand booking engine, Harrisburg MDT to Sydney SYD is MDT SYD 1843 and SYD to Auckland AKL is SYD AKL 276 for a total fare of 2119 which saved 1580 dollars from the MDT AKL 3699 just by using the approach airport strategy and the same, major brand flight search engine. I wish my boss would pay me 1500 dollars per half hour.
